Our immune system is an incredibly complex network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to protect our bodies from potential threats. Let's take a closer look at how this miraculous defence mechanism works.

The fundamental elements of immunity

The immune system is made up of several key components that work in perfect harmony:

White blood cells (leukocytes) form the basis of our immune system. They are divided into two main groups: phagocytes, which “devour” foreign particles, and lymphocytes, which remember previous infections and help the body recognise invaders.

Natural killer (NK) cells are among the most interesting components of our immunity. These ‘natural killers’ can identify and eliminate abnormal cells without prior exposure.

T and B lymphocytes are the two main types of cells in adaptive immunity. B lymphocytes produce antibodies, while T lymphocytes directly attack infected or abnormal cells.

Innate and adaptive immunity

Our defence system operates on two fundamental levels:

Innate immunity provides immediate but non-specific protection. It includes physical barriers such as the skin and mucous membranes, as well as cells that respond to general signs of infection.

Adaptive immunity develops over the course of a lifetime in response to specific pathogens. Its main advantage is immunological memory—the ability to respond more quickly when encountering the same pathogen again.

Immunity and Japanese research

Japanese scientists have contributed significantly to our understanding of the immune system. Their research often focuses on natural substances and traditional practices that can support healthy immune function.

It is interesting to note that in Japan, the effects of various polysaccharides from mushrooms and plant sources on NK cell activity and overall immune function have been studied for decades.

How to maintain a healthy immune system

Maintaining a strong immune system is a complex process that encompasses several aspects of lifestyle:

- A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals

- Regular physical activity

- Adequate sleep and rest

- Effective stress management

- Limiting alcohol consumption and smoking
